Parental Controls

2. Parental Controls by Device

Apple iPhone and iPad

Apple Screen Time can restrict web content, app installation, purchases, privacy changes and other device features.

Open Settings.
Select Screen Time.
Choose the child or applicable family member.
Open Content & Privacy Restrictions.
Enable restrictions and select the appropriate web-content limit.
Set a Screen Time passcode that the child does not know.

Create a separate non-administrator account for the child.
Open System Settings.
Select Screen Time.
Choose the child’s account.

Google Family Link provides supervision tools for supported Android devices and Chromebooks.

Create or supervise the child’s Google Account.
Install or open Google Family Link.
Select the child’s profile.
Open the content or Chrome website controls.
Restrict explicit websites and review app permissions.
Prevent the child from changing supervision settings.

Windows and Xbox

Microsoft Family Safety can provide content filters, app controls, screen-time limits and activity features on supported services.

Create a Microsoft family group.
Add the child using a separate child account.
Open Microsoft Family Safety.
Configure web and search filtering.
Set age-appropriate app and game restrictions.
Do not give the child administrator access.

Settings and menu names may change. Device manufacturers periodically update their operating systems. Follow the linked manufacturer instructions if your device displays different options.

3. Protect the Entire Home Network

Network-level filtering can help block adult domains on multiple devices connected to the same home Wi-Fi network. Depending on your router or internet provider, filtering may be available through router settings, a family-safety service or a filtered DNS provider.

Sign in to your router’s administration panel and look for Parental Controls, Family Controls, Content Filtering, Access Restrictions or Safe Browsing.

Internet Provider Controls

Some internet providers offer account-level security and parental-control tools. Review your provider’s website or contact its customer-support department.

A family-filtered DNS service can block many known adult domains before the browser connects to them.

Network filtering has limits. Router or DNS protection may not control devices using cellular data, another Wi-Fi network, a VPN, encrypted DNS or independently configured network settings. Install device-level controls as an additional layer.

4. Search Engines, Browsers and Applications

Search filtering can reduce explicit results, but it should be used with device and network protections. Search controls generally apply only to the service where they are enabled.

Enable Safe Search

Enable explicit-content filtering on every search engine used by the child. When possible, lock the setting through a supervised family account.

Restrict Extra Browsers

Review installed browsers and prevent unauthorized application installation. A child may otherwise use a different browser that is not covered by the configured restrictions.

Social media, messaging, streaming, gaming and file-sharing applications may have separate safety and maturity controls.

Disable Guest Access

Guest profiles and unprotected administrator accounts may bypass restrictions. Protect every accessible adult or administrator account.

Enable Google SafeSearch through a supervised Google Family Link account.
Enable Microsoft Bing SafeSearch through the child’s Microsoft account.
Disable or restrict private browsing when the device’s controls allow it.
Require approval before new browsers, VPNs or applications can be installed.
Review browser extensions and remove unfamiliar or unauthorized extensions.

5. Good Family Internet-Safety Practices

Technology works best when combined with age-appropriate conversations, clear household rules and ongoing involvement by a parent or guardian.

Use Separate Accounts

Give each child a supervised, age-appropriate account. Keep adult and administrator accounts password protected.

Protect Passwords

Do not share parental-control passwords or passcodes. Avoid using easily guessed birthdays, names or repeated family passwords.

Keep Devices Updated

Install operating-system, browser, router and security updates. Review parental-control settings after major updates.

Place Devices Thoughtfully

For younger children, consider keeping computers and shared devices in common household areas where use can be supervised.

Discuss Online Risks

Explain that children should not share personal information, images, passwords or location details with strangers online.

Review Controls Regularly

Confirm that filters remain enabled and account for newly purchased phones, tablets, televisions, game systems and other connected devices.

Create a safety plan: Encourage children to tell a trusted adult if they encounter sexual material, receive inappropriate messages or are asked to share intimate images. Avoid punishing a child simply for reporting an accidental exposure or unsafe interaction.

6. Limitations of Parental-Control Technology

Parental-control tools can reduce risk, but no software, filter, age gate or monitoring service can guarantee that every inappropriate page will be blocked. Controls may also occasionally block appropriate content.
